Clapham Junction….Earlsfield……Wimbledon…..Raynes Park…..Motspur Park….

The most boring train journey in the world gave me the inspiration to improve my lot in life. It gave me the opportunity to create my design for life.

I had been thinking a lot about what I wanted to do and getting frustrated by the fact that my days were slipping through my hands. Sound familiar?

So somewhere between London and Epsom I had the idea of designing my life, mapping out what I wanted to be famous for. Here’s what I came up with.

  • To be a great father and husband
  • To lay the foundations for a fantastic career
  • To have balance in my life

Writing out this design filled me with freedom. All of a sudden I had a plan. The goals weren’t huge, I didn’t plan to climb Mount Everest but I knew that these were things that would bring me happiness.

The ideas motivated me so much that about two hours later I revisited the list and started to write out the actions that would help me get to my goals over the next month or so. Lots of the actions were simple things that with a small amount of effort I could achieve. The next day I was even more motivated and set up some time in my diary to review the list and to make sure I was sticking to my actions and appraise myself weekly.

About 3 months later I was living to my design, I had a better relationship with my wife and children, in my work-life I had been featured in an industry magazine which was helping me to achieve recognition and I felt balanced and fulfilled.

So what did I do next?

I ‘sharpened the saw’ and reviewed my design to make sure this was still where I wanted to go. I still review the list weekly and I fully expect the deliver my goals.
