Pig-headed people are often frowned upon. I’ve just searched synonyms of pig-headed and words like obstinate, stubborn, contrary and even perverse came up. Not the most flattering descriptions I’m sure you would agree.
But is it really that bad to be so determined?
One of my favourite quotes of all time is by George Bernard Shaw when he described the “Unreasonable Man”.
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the conditions that surround him; the unreasonable man adapts surrounding conditions to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
So think about the unreasonable man? Think about Steve Jobs, Richard Branson or in a sporting context people like Clive Woodward or Alex Ferguson. All are or were people who made exceptional progress in their fields by being pig-headed and bending the world around them. All had a vision for what they wanted to achieve and didn’t let anyone or anything get in their way. Sometimes they needed to be innovative to manoeuvre around problems but most of the time it was sheer bloody-mindedness and an unwavering commitment to their vision that saw them through.
If you want to make a difference like few others do, push yourself and your business, create more innovation and change but above all else be unreasonable.
