Peter Drucker once said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast!”
But what is culture?
Most definitions say something like, “Culture is the way we do things around here.”
I have a slightly different interpretation.
I think culture is about what we let people get away with.
This probably sounds a bit negative but if you think about it, there are lots of reasons why it’s true.
If you let people get away with being late for meetings, you’ll create a culture where deadlines don’t matter.
If you let people get away with not giving feedback, you’ll create a culture of employee dissatisfaction.
If you let people get away with not doing the basics well, you’ll create a culture of poor execution.
If you let people get away with speaking poorly of colleagues or other teams, you’ll create a culture of self-interest and distrust.
What do you let people get away with?
What’s your culture?
BONUS SONG: I couldn’t decide whether to use the Electronic song as the soundtrack for this post or a song by James with the same title so decided to include them both! The video for this song is very interesting. Enjoy….
