I started a new job a few weeks ago. As part of my induction I met with the Chief Executive and we talked about the challenges and opportunities in my role. At the end of the meeting we agreed that at the end of my first 100 days I would share with him the strategy for my business area and he would share the overall company strategy with me.
As I let the outcome of this conversation ruminate in my brain, my first thoughts were:
1. There’s no turning back now, and
2. Wouldn’t it be great to do it in 50 days!
I know this puts me in under pressure both to deliver the strategy in half the time but also because it raises expectations for the future.
But that is exactly the point. Raising expectations will mean I push myself further to deliver even better results.
When doing anything new, start as you mean to go on.
