“The speed of the boss, is the speed of the team.”

– Lee Iacocca

I really agree with this statement, up to a point.

As a leader, if your decision making is to ponderous and slow you will create apathy and disengagement. Equally, if you are too fast and frantic, you will create panic and a distrust of your long term vision.

However, we don’t lead teams, we lead individuals and as such all individuals approach change at different speeds.

Some will come along slowly, fearing loss at every turn.

Others will embrace the change, always eager to embrace the next phase.

Knowing this is the first stage, it takes emotional intelligence to recognise where the individuals in your team are on this curve.

The second is to spend time at both a team and individual level working through the change and allowing each person to space to accept the change at their speed.
