I woke up yesterday morning to find that I had been burgled and the car that I purchased less than a month ago had been stolen.

I was metaphorically licking my wounds by sharing the news with friends on Whatsapp when one of them text back saying, “Breaking news: Viola Beach are dead”

Viola Beach were an up and coming UK band who, as you can tell from the video above, looked to set to step into the shoes of bands like the Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses and Oasis. I was due to see them play in less than a month’s time and was really looking forward to it.

In the context of the conversation I didn’t really know what he was saying so quickly went online to see what had happened. Sure enough there were news accounts breaking of how the band and their manager had died in a car accident after playing a gig in Sweden.

I took two things from yesterday’s events:

  1. We’ve just lost more musical talent. Whilst clearly not in the world famous, globally recognised bracket that David Bowie existed in, Viola Beach would have gone on to delight many of us with more tunes like “Swings and Waterslides”.
  2. Despite the loss of my car, there’s always someone in a worse situation, so I should be thankful what I do have.

RIP Viola Beach
