I woke up this morning wishing I was the day before yesterday’s man.

Regular readers will know that I am in training for my first marathon – the race is actually next Sunday (10th April).

As part of my tapering down for the race itself I went out for my last longer run yesterday. Everything was fine until about mile 10 when I started to feel my right calf tighten up. I managed to run/limp the remaining distance back to my car but I knew it didn’t feel good.

I might not be able to run in the race next Sunday.

The rest of yesterday was mainly about icing my calf and trying to release the pressure. And wishing it was the day before yesterday.

What could I have done differently?

I could have run a shorter distance. I could have warmed up a little more. I could have run a different route that might not have put the same strain on my calves.

Ultimately, though this is a wasted emotion.

I need to concentrate on the injury. I need to concentrate on stretching out my calf and getting some blood pumping through it to aid the recovery.

I might not be able to run in the race next Sunday.

I will be incredibly disappointed but it’s not the end of the world. The training I have done to build up the distance will be helpful for future races. I have a few 10k races lined up for the Summer months and a set of targets I want to achieve. There are other marathon distance races I can do later in the year.

Anyway, time to get back to my recovery…..
