There is a lot of talk these days about operational excellence. The drive to deliver better service for customers, save money, build new products and create a great working environment for staff necessitates it.

But, in order for operational excellence to be embraced we need to make it second nature.

So, how do we do this?

First, we need to deliver the small things as well as the big things. Making it second nature means everything we do needs to be delivered to the same high standard.

Next comes practice. Whether it is a pitch to new customer, code on the next product or the strategy on our next contract negotiation we need to put the time in upfront to make it ‘right first time’.

Finally, we need to embrace learning. Operational excellence doesn’t mean we don’t make mistakes. What is does mean though is that we take the learning from these situations to improve the next time.

If you want to deliver operational excellence – “don’t hesitate, just carry on!”
