As a society we are lucky enough to live at a time when economically and socially we are more developed than ever before. At the same time most surveys suggest we are more stressed and unhappy than at any time since records began.

On the surface that doesn’t make sense. How can it be that in world where most people enjoy higher levels of prosperity and material possessions that levels of well-being is lower than ever?

This is the irony of materialism!

The constant striving for money and consumer products breeds aggression, narcissism, overly competitive behaviours and fewer positive thoughts.

I am not saying we should abandon our worldly possessions but I do think we should shift our focus towards leading a more fulfilling life which comes from our experiences and our learning, not what we own.
